>> THERE'S A BUNCH OF TYPES OF ENGINEERING OPTIONS.
WE HAVE CHEMICAL, ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL, BIO-MEDICAL, INDUSTRIAL -- A WHOLE BUNCH.
>> ACTUALLY, WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING ON THE ROAD, THE BRIDGES ARE CIVIL ENGINEERS.
THE ROLE OF ENGINEERING AND THE FIELD OF ENGINEERING, IT'S JUST SO BROAD AND THERE'RE SO MANY REALLY COOL OPPORTUNITIES.
YOU CAN MAKE CANDY, LIKE ME, AND THEN MAKE MOMENTS OF GOODNESS OF PEOPLE.
I ALSO HAVE ENGINEERING FRIENDS THAT ARE WORKING AT THE COMPANIES THAT ARE ROLLING OUT THE VACCINE.
SO, I THINK WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A REALLY HUGE IMPACT.
>> ENGINEERING IS EXCITING BECAUSE WE MAKE THINGS THAT NEVER EXISTED BEFORE TO SOLVE PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS.
>> THE WORK WE DO, THE RESEARCH WE DO, THE PROJECTS WE IMPLEMENT, THE ACTUALLY END UP EFFECTING THE GENERAL POPULOUS.
EVERYDAY PEOPLE IN VERY LONG-LASTING, IMPACTFUL WAYS.
FOR GENERATIONS!
WHAT YOU DO AS AN ENGINEER ABSOLUTELY IMPACTS SOMEBODY'S LIFE.

I WONDER WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GOOD ENGINEER.
WHAT KIND OF QUALITIES DO YOU THINK AN ENGINEER WOULD NEED?

I THINK THAT'S A BIG PORTION OF IT.
>> IF YOU TEND TO BE VERY INQUISITIVE, THEN YOU'RE ABLE TO ASK THE NECESSARY QUESTIONS, RIGHT?
TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU NEED TO DO, AND WHAT YOU NEED TO GET, AND WHO YOU NEED TO BRING TOGETHER TO GET FROM WHERE YOU ARE TO WHERE YOU'RE TRYING TO GET TO.
>> VERY DETAIL ORIENTED, LOGICAL.
YOU GO THROUGH CERTAIN STEPS TO GET TO THE END.
>> WE HAVE VERY DEFINED PROCESSES, BUT AS AN ENGINEER WE THINK THINGS THROUGH VERY LOGICALLY.
>> YOU HAVE TO ASK THE QUESTIONS, FIRST AND FOREMOST, TO CLARIFY FOR YOURSELF, TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THE EXPECTATION IS FROM THE OTHER PERSON.
>> ASK GOOD QUESTIONS, LIKE WHY ARE WE DOING THINGS THE WAY WE'RE DOING?
WHY DOES IT HAVE TO FUNCTION THIS WAY?
WHY CAN'T WE MAKE IT BETTER?
>> IT'S REALLY GOOD FOR AN ENGINEER TO LISTEN TO PEOPLE -- AND REALLY LISTEN, LIKE NOT JUST BE QUIET AND WAIT YOUR TURN TO TALK.
PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT PEOPLE SAY AND HOW THEY SAY IT.
AND TRY AND REFLECT THAT BACK TO THEM.
AND TALK TO A LOT OF PEOPLE.
SO NOT JUST ONE PERSON SAYS, ALL FIGURED OUT.
AND YOU SAY, WELL, YES.
OKAY, THANK YOU.
BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I'VE SPOKEN TO EVERYONE WHO THIS MIGHT IMPACT.
>> A LOT OF THE PRODUCTS THAT YOU SEE OUT ON THE SHELVES TODAY, IT'S NOT JUST COMING FROM ONE ENGINEER WHO CREATED THAT.
IT'S REALLY A TEAM EFFORT.

SO YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH PEOPLE EFFECTIVELY.

>> ENGINEERS NEED TO FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH LEARNING HOW TO MAKE MISTAKES AND LEARN FROM THEM.
YOU MIGHT RUN INTO A COUPLE ISSUES HERE AND THERE, BUT REALLY JUST LEARN HOW TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH.
LEARN FROM THAT AND THEN, YOU KNOW, CONTINUE TO PUSH FORWARD.
>> THE MORE THAT YOU LEARN, THE MORE YOU REALIZE THAT YOU DON'T KNOW.
BECAUSE YOU START GETTING EXPOSED TO SO MANY OTHER THINGS.
AND SO IF YOU ALWAYS WANT TO LEARN THINGS, AND ALWAYS WANT TO GROW, YOU WANT TO BE AN ENGINEER, BECAUSE YOU'RE ALWAYS LEARNING THINGS.
>> YOU HAVE TO BE, YOU KNOW, CONFIDENT.
DON'T BE AFRAID OF THINGS YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT.
YOU CAN ALWAYS LEARN THEM.
>> THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO -- LEARN AND HAVE FUN.

IT'S SOMETHING ENGINEERS USE WHEN THEY HAVE A NEW CHALLENGE.
>> SO, YOU WANT TO USE AN ENGINEERING APPROACH TO SOLVE A PROBLEM.
IT'S REALLY EXCITING TO START ON A NEW PROBLEM THAT'S FULL OF LOTS OF PROMISE.
YOU KNOW, IT'S ALMOST LIKE A BIRTHDAY PRESENT.
WHAT'S INSIDE?
WHAT COOL THINGS CAN WE DO ON THIS?
SO THE FIRST THING YOU GOTTA DO IS BACK UP AND MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY IS.
AND THIS PART USUALLY INVOLVES TALKING TO LOTS OF PEOPLE.
THERE'S A PROBLEM IN THE WORLD, WE ARE LOOKING TO FIX IT.
WE DON'T JUST WANT TO TALK TO WHOEVER BROUGHT OUT ATTENTION TO IT.
WE WANT TO TALK TO PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE AREA.
WE WANT TO TALK TO PEOPLE WHO MAYBE WANT TO BUY THIS THING LATER.
WE WANT TO TALK TO PEOPLE WHO TRIED TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM SOMEWHERE ELSE IN SOME OTHER WAY.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE I'VE SPOKEN TO EVERYONE WHO THIS MIGHT IMPACT.
ONCE YOU HAVE DEFINED THE PROBLEM, THEN WE HAVE BRAINSTORMING, WE HAVE THE FUN PART.
WE HAVE THE WHAT ARE ALL THE POSSIBLE IDEAS THAT WE MIGHT BRING TO BEAR ON HERE.
AND OFTEN THERE ISN'T LIKE JUST ONE IDEA, THERE ISN'T JUST ONE SOLUTION.
USUALLY THERE'S LIKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF SOLUTIONS THAT ARE GOOD SOLUTIONS, BUT MAYBE IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE ONE OF THEM IS BETTER THAN ANOTHER.
SO YOU'VE GOTTA HAVE THAT LIST THAT HELPS YOU PICK THAT OUT.
SO FOR EXAMPLE, MAYBE YOU ONLY HAVE SO MUCH MONEY TO SPEND ON THE SOLUTION, THAT ONE COMES UP PRETTY OFTEN.
AND SO, IF YOU HAVE THE IDEA THAT, OH, OKAY, THE ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM IS SOMETHING THAT COSTS $40 MILLION AND I'VE GOT $25, WELL THEN THAT SOLUTION IS NOT THE BEST ONE FOR THIS PARTICULAR SET UP.
SO I NEED TO COMPARE ALL THESE THINGS I BRAINSTORMED AGAINST MY WE CALL THOSE CONSTRAINTS.
AFTER YOU'VE DONE THAT, MAYBE YOU HAVE A FEW -- YOU DON'T HAVE A ZILLION IDEAS ANYMORE, YOU GOT TWO OR THREE.
YOU DO PROTOTYPES.
YOU MAKE A LITTLE SMALL VERSION OF IT, OR AN EASY TO BUILD VERSION OF IT, AND YOU TEST THAT OUT.
THAT'S ENGINEERING DESIGN.

WELL NOW THAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE DESIGN THINKING PROCESS, WE'RE GOING TO SEE IF WE CAN USE IT TO SOLVE OUR OWN PROBLEM THROUGHOUT THE SHOW.
HERE'S THE PROBLEM WE'LL BE WORKING WITH.

I'M REALLY THE ONE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE LINE, SEE HOW FAST IT NORMALLY RUNS, AND THEN TRY AND DESIGN AND SCALE UP EQUIPMENT SO THAT WE CAN MAKE REESE'S CUPS IN LARGE QUANTITIES.
SO IF WE HAVE A FORMULA WITH 80% CHOCOLATE, WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR TANKS AND OUR PUMPS ARE SIZED APPROPRIATELY SO THAT WE DON'T HAVE THIS TINY TANK TRYING TO FEED THIS MASSIVE LINE.
I WAS DEFINITELY THAT LEGO AND LINCOLN LOG, TINKER TOY TYPE KID.
AND I WAS EXTREMELY INTERESTED LIKE ALL DIFFERENT KINDS OF GADGETS.
I WOULD TALK WITH THE OTHER NEIGHBOR KIDS ABOUT HOW I WANTED TO BE THE ONE IN THE FUTURE TO CREATE FLYING CARS AND HOVER BOARDS AND ALL OF THIS OTHER CRAZY, CREATIVE THINGS.
MY PARENTS WERE VERY SUPPORTIVE OF THAT.
IF I WANTED TO SAY "HEY, DAD, CAN I TAKE YOUR TOOLS AND TAKE THIS ALARM CLOCK APART?
I WANT TO SEE HOW IT WORKS."
THEY WOULD TOTALLY SAY, "GO FOR IT."
I THINK THAT THEY UNDERSTOOD AT THAT EARLY AGE THAT I HAD THE MIND OF A SCIENTIST, OF AN ENGINEER.
THAT, YOU KNOW, SHE MIGHT BE BREAKING THINGS INITIALLY, BUT SHE JUST WANTS TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE WORLD WORKS.
I THINK THE YOUNG KELLY WAS MORE MECHANICALLY-MINDED.
I WAS REALLY INTERESTED IN CARS AND PLANES.
AND SOMEHOW IN MIDDLE SCHOOL EVERYTHING KIND OF SHIFTED TO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING.
AND EVEN GOING THROUGH COLLEGE, I WASN'T QUITE SURE THAT I WOULD LAND ON FOOD, OR CANDY FOR THAT MATTER.
BUT SEEING THE JOB LISTING AT HERSHEY ONE DAY, I THOUGHT, OH MY GOSH, THAT ROLE SOUNDS COMPLETELY PERFECT.
I HAVE A LOT OF FOND MEMORIES OF HERSHEY'S.
MEMORIES OF MAKING S'MORES IN THE SUMMERTIME AND GOING TO THE MOVIES AND HAVING TWIZZLERS.
SO I THINK IT'D BE REALLY COOL TO BE A PART OF THAT, AND TRY AND MAKE SOME MOMENTS OF GOODNESS FOR TODAY'S CONSUMERS AS WELL, SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE SUCH FOND MEMORIES, LIKE I DO.
MY MOST RECENT ONE THAT CAME OUT IS THE HERSHEY'S AND REESE'S ORGANIC MILK AND DARK CHOCOLATE VERSIONS.
SOME OF MY FELLOW COWORKERS IN THE SAME GROUP, THEY'VE LAUNCHED PRODUCTS LIKE THE REESE'S CUP WITH PRETZELS ON THE INSIDE, AND A LOT OF THE REALLY COOL, FUNKY KIT KAT FLAVORS THAT ARE COMING OUT NOW, LIKE BIRTHDAY CAKE AND MINT DUOS.
WALKING INTO SOME OF THESE DIFFERENT PLANTS, YOU JUST GET HIT IMMEDIATELY BY LIKE ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT SMELLS.
GOING INTO THE PLANTS THAT MAKE OUR REESE'S PEANUT BUTTER CUPS, IT'S JUST THIS INTENSE AROMA OF PEANUT BUTTER AND CHOCOLATE.
GOING DOWN TO THE LINE FACILITY THAT MAKES TWIZZLERS, YOU JUST SMELL OF THESE WONDERFUL CHERRY AND STRAWBERRY FLAVORS.
AND GETTING TO ACTUALLY SEE THE EQUIPMENT, IT'S LIKE WALKING INTO WILLY WONKA'S CHOCOLATE FACTORY.
BUT IT'S MUCH SAFER.
[ CHUCKLES ] IT'S JUST SO SURREAL TO KNOW THAT THE CANDIES THAT I'M GOING TO BE WORKING ON, AND THE CANDIES THAT MY COWORKERS ARE WORKING ON, THAT THOSE ARE GOING TO BE LIKE THE NEXT MOMENTS OF GOODNESS.
I THINK IT'S JUST A REALLY GREAT FEELING.
I ACTUALLY HAVE A SHELF IN MY OFFICE WHERE I KEEP ALL OF THE PRODUCTS THAT I WORKED ON SO FAR.
IT'S LIKE A REALLY COOL REMINDER OF LIKE, HEY, I WORKED ON THAT.

I GUESS MY PARENTS REALIZED THAT I WAS A VERY HANDS-ON PERSON AND PROBABLY HELPED GUIDE ME WITH MY CAREER PATH.
I WAS PROBABLY GOING TO BE CONTENT FARMING OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, BUT MY MOM AND DAD ENCOURAGED ME THAT THAT'S GREAT, AND IF THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WE SUPPORT THAT.
BUT WE ALSO THINK THAT YOU PROBABLY SHOULD ADVANCE YOUR EDUCATION A LITTLE BIT.
ENGINEERING WITH AGRICULTURE, ENGINEERING WITH ANYTHING IS KIND OF THE PIECE OF THE PUZZLE THAT SOLVES THE PROBLEM.
AND THAT HELPS PEOPLE BE ABLE TO DO THEIR JOB BETTER, MORE EFFICIENTLY, MORE EASILY, MAYBE MORE SAFELY.

OUR HARVESTERS, FOR EXAMPLE, THE OWNER OF THE COMPANY WHO FOUNDED THE COMPANY HAD TO HAND HARVEST 100 ACRES OF TOMATOES.
THAT WAS A BIG JOB AND THAT NECESSITY WAS WHAT CAUSED HIM TO WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO IT EASIER.
PEOPLE PURELY COULDN'T KEEP UP WITH DEMAND.
THEY WERE PICKING TOMATOES TO GO TO A PLANT THAT WOULD MAKE THEM INTO ANY TYPE OF TOMATO-BASED PRODUCT.
THE HARVESTER WAS ABLE TO COME IN THERE AND DO THE WORK OF 50 PEOPLE IN A DAY'S TIME, WITH THE NEED FOR TWO PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE THE HARVESTER.
THE HARVESTER ITSELF IS PRETTY SIMPLE.
IT TAKES THE TOMATO AND THE PLANT AND LIFTS IT OFF THE GROUND, LIKE YOU WOULD WITH YOUR HANDS.
IT KIND OF CARRIES IT UP A CONVEYOR.
IT WILL SHAKE IT, JUST LIKE YOU WOULD SHAKE A VINE TO HAVE A TOMATO FALL OFF OF IT.
THE TOMATO FALLS OFF INTO A COLLECTION AREA THAT IS KIND OF SOFT AND GENTLE.
AND THEN IT DELIVERS IT INTO A TRAILER.
WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR CUPBOARD AND SEE THAT GREEN BEAN IN THERE ON THE CAN, OR THAT PICKLE IN THE JAR, OR THAT TOMATO PRODUCT, YOU START TO THINK ABOUT HOW IT ACTUALLY GOT THERE.
IT'S PRETTY INCREDIBLE.

WE HAD TO BRING POWER AS WELL TO POWER UP THE ROLLERCOASTER.
SO WE HAD TO WORK WITH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS.

>> COMING UP THROUGH SCHOOL, AND THEN EVEN INTO COLLEGE, YOU ALWAYS HEAR ABOUT HOW MALES PRETTY MUCH DOMINATE THE ENGINEERING FIELD.
BUT ONE THING THAT I HAVE NOTICED, ESPECIALLY OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, IS THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF NEWER ENGINEERS THAT ARE PRETTY MUCH WOMEN.
AND SO IT'S REALLY EXCITING TO SEE THAT.
YOU KNOW, IF SOMEBODY EVER TOLD YOU THAT YOU CAN'T DO SOMETHING, OR THAT YOU SHOULDN'T DO SOMETHING BECAUSE THEY DON'T THINK THAT YOU'RE SMART ENOUGH, THEY DON'T THINK THAT YOU'RE THE RIGHT GENDER TO GO INTO A PARTICULAR FIELD, I WOULD SAY JUST IGNORE THEM.
DON'T LET ANYBODY EVER DISCOURAGE YOU FROM DOING SOMETHING THAT YOU WANT TO DO.
WHEN YOU'RE 20 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD, AND YOU'RE IN THAT FIELD THAT YOU REALLY WANTED TO BE IN, AS YOU'RE GROWING UP AND YOU'RE DOING SO WELL, THEIR OPINIONS REALLY DON'T MATTER.
>> ENGINEERING IS JUST FOR ONE KIND OF PEOPLE WITH ONE KIND OF BACKGROUND.
ENGINEERS DON'T LOOK LIKE A SINGLE SORT OF THING, OR A SINGLE KIND OF PERSON.
>> I'M REALLY ADAMANT ABOUT HELPING OTHER YOUNG FOLKS SEE -- ESPECIALLY YOUNG FOLKS WHO LOOK LIKE ME, WHO OFTENTIMES DON'T GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW, OH, THIS IS A CAREER OPTION FOR ME.
>> I THINK IN GENERAL, HAVING WOMEN AND THEN PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT GENDERS AND RACES, IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT JUST TO GET THEIR EXPERIENCES.
>> IF YOU HAVE A DIVERSE TEAM THAT'S WORKING TOGETHER ON SOLVING THE PROBLEM, THAT MEANS YOU'LL HAVE THE MOST ROBUST STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM, BECAUSE A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW WILL HAVE AGREED ON WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.
AND WHEN YOU THINK OF SOLUTIONS, THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE CONSIDERED A WHOLE BUNCH OF THOSE DIFFERENT VIEWPOINTS THAT YOU'D MISS IF IT WAS JUST ONE PERSON WHO WAS LOOKING AT IT.
ENGINEERS HAVE TO COME FROM ALL OVER WITH ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT LIFE EXPERIENCES SO WE ARE SOLVING THE RIGHT PROBLEMS THAT THE WORLD NEEDS SOLVED TO MAKE EVERYONE HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER.
>> DIVERSITY AND TRUE EQUITABLE INCLUSION IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL, ESSENTIAL WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, ENGINEERING, OR ANY OF THE STEM SECTOR ESPECIALLY.
HAVE THE NECESSARY VOICES AT THE TABLE.
>> DON'T EVER THINK YOU'RE NOT CAPABLE OF DOING ANYTHING, BECAUSE IF YOU HAD ASKED ME 30 YEARS AGO WHAT I'D BE DOING TODAY, THIS WOULD BE THE FARTHEST FROM WHAT I THOUGHT.
SO, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU APPLY YOURSELF TO DO.
DON'T BE AFRAID TO TRY.
>> WE REALLY NEED MORE PEOPLE TO GET INTO OUR ENGINEERING FIELD AND CREATE THESE REALLY GREAT IDEAS.
